I’ve had the ION Discover DJ for about a week now and it’s been a great MIDI DJ controller so far. It’s highly usable with just the right amount of controls for basic mixing and scratching. For being mostly plastic, the device feels well built – with the knobs and buttons twisting/clicking solidly. The crossfader has a metal stem with a removable cap(!), and cuts smoothly.
The jogs are awesomely functional. They are touch sensitive (i can hold the unit upside down and activate the platters). They are also as smooth as butter, and amazingly sensitive when it comes to their scratch performance.
The current packed-in software (Mixvibes Cross LE) is great for beginners/intermediate djs, even some pros might prefer it. But the great thing about the Discover DJ is that it’s also a MIDI device that can be used with any dj software that supports a midi controller (NI Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixxx, DJay, and others), with a bit of mapping.
As either a beginner system or a backup for a pro, i think the unit is awesome for the price. no bells and whistles, just the basics with great jog wheels. I let my nieces and nephews scratch away on it, not worrying about it getting damaged. I plan on attaching guitar strap locks to it, so i can hang it around my neck and play it like a guitar.
Also for best results with audio performance, one should use an external audio interface with the Discover DJ (it doesn’t include one – it’s only a controller). If one has to use their computer’s onboard audio, download ASIO4all (Windows only) for best performance.

First off I want to say if you have been DJing for a long time this isn’t for you. This product is GREAT for people that what to know what its like to DJ but your no a pro or you don’t want to put up hundreds til you know your really interested. It has 2 jog wheels for scratching and such, a basic mixer and it comes with a software that is easy to use and yet you can make some series mixes on it. It is more then you would ever expect out of a $90 product!.

First off, let me be clear…THERE IS NO DIGITAL DEVICE ON THE MARKET THAT CAN SUCCESSFULLY (closely enough) SIMULATE VHYNIL SCRATHING FOR UNDER 400 DOLLARS…With that being said. Take this product as it is. I have been DJ’ing for about 6 years and I can say that it doesnt even come close to the control or precision that comes through vhynil but this is a very capable device.
One thing to understand is that if you are looking for something to scratch on, you need Jog Wheels that are as large as you can find, and you need something that is touch sensitive rather than motion sensitive even though they arent as sensitive as other products in the 3-5 hundred dollar range. This product has both of those. DONT however expect to become a master DJ with these…and dont get cocky because you used the software to to automix someting, real DJing is not something that can be learned through something like this but it will help you find your feel especially if you are looking to get into digital mixing rather than vhynil.
For 80 Bucks this is a decent product. It is great for both beginners and pro’s that want something cheap to use as a travel MIDI. Only thing is its really flimsy. The knobs are nowhere near as durable as they should be and I am actually purchasing this again because after 5 months of use…(3-5 times a week for practice) Mine is in pretty poor condition. If you get it, you wont waste your money no matter how skilled you are, rookies wouldnt know the difference anyway.

Absolutely amazed with this device for the cost. Although it is nothing like scratching on vynil, the traking on the tables, touch senativity and overall quality is very good, especially for the cost. I would look at it as a new instrument for scratching, but after installing asio4all, and updating the DJ Cross software to version 1.3.2, and playing with the settings, the capabilities of this systems as a stand alone are great. Was looking for a way to mix and scratch while on location in Africa, and cases of vynil and moving tables here was not an option. It is taking a bit of getting used to but defiately fun to play with and actually precise enough that with more practice on this it would be just fine for small parties and dj events.
Highly recomend after reading somewhat mixed reviews, but I have not been dissapointed. Also, the software update corrected a small issue with the response from one of the tables, hardware works just fine, may have been the problem in a review that someone left complaining about something simmilar.

Please put aside your gear snobbery people and see Discover DJ for what it is. It’s a rapidly changing world out there and aspiring DJs don’t need to spend hundreds on turntables to see if DJing is for them, especially given that new vinyl is increasingly difficult to get. Now they can simply spend less than a ton on a really capable and extremely fun to use controller. And for seasoned pros, this is actually a very viable backup unit as it can also be configured via MIDI. Discover DJ is utterly perfect for the target market, and a lot of fun for skilled DJs too.
