What are you trying to accomplish? I have a direct drive Technics 1200 (about 10 years old or so). Are you just listening to music? Are you trying to scratch and DJ? The belts in belt driven models break at times. The big difference is you can’t manually move the record with a belt driven, so if you’re looking to DJ….you want direct drive.
As stated a belt drive has the belt running between the motor and the turntable. A direct drive has the turntable directly mounted on the motor. A direct drive is much better.
