What is the little circular plastic part on turntables that sits perfectly where the record would?
It seems to serve no real purpose. It sits perfectly where the record does, either alone or under/on top of the record, and seem to make no difference anywhere. It's stored in the surface of the record player and pops out to be totally loose. Looks kind of like a tiny steering wheel.

That sounds like the adapter for a 45 rpm single vinyl record. You may be too young to even know what I’m talking about. LOL.
Does it look like the ones in the ad I’ve attached?

If it is in the center of the turntable, it is probably for 45 rpm records. They have smaller outside diameter with a bigger center hole and typically had just a single song on each side. Maybe you are too young to have seen those.

I agree, that sounds like a 45 adapter. I believe you gently pop it up then turn it slightly to get it to stay up…..
