What are those turntables I see some people in musical groups turning with their hands to get them started?
OK. I'm old and from another planet. I see turntables at Guitar Center when I go there for strings, and I've seen people on TV operate them with their hands, seemingly to get them started. What's the story on these?
Thanks

From your question, I assume you are familiar with normal turntables, (aka record players). Those are normal record players, but with the drive mechanism disconnected. They may even sell them like that now for the music industry. If you are old enough, you’ll remember the scratching sound that records used to make if the turntable were bumped while a record was playing. Well, they use that sound in music now. Those turntables are used, mostly in rap, but also in some other music, to add exactly that sound. And since they don’t want the music on the record, it needs to be turned by hand at a slower speed and for a shorter time.
